For purposes of some of my Linux friends, I shall be
posting the dmesg from assorted Linux boxen that I
have access to. (or at least access to /var/log/dmesg)
If you have a machine that you would like to have posted
(you need not tell us exactly _where_ the machine in question
is...)
just mail me
I shall put a small description of the hardware that is
in the machine (other than what you can get from reading the
dmesg...) for the sake of making some small, non absolute
comparisons. Keep in mind that BogoMips are no real comparison
between different CPUs, or even same company CPUs (e.g., Pent
vs. PIII)...

An old AsusTek M4A88T-M computer
This is an ASUSTeK Computer INC. M4A88T-M that I picked up just to throw in a case for some basic basement functionality in a computer. It has a 6 core AMD Phenom II X6 1045T CPU, 16G of ram, and an older Nvidia GeForce 9500 GT. I have stuffed old SCSI controllers and disks in this box, as it is just a media server and YABS (Yet Another Backup Server), OR, LOCKSS (Lots of Copies Keeps Stuff Safe). This box is running AntiX linux.
The Cray XD670 RoT nodes with Nvidia H200 GPUs
This is an HPE (Cray) node with eight Nvidia H200 SXM GPUs. It has 1.0T of memory, 128 cores of Intel Xeon Platinum 85930Q CPUs. It has a small boot drive. This is the GPU node in the cluster where I work, we have several of thse in addition to the RTX Pro 6000 and H200 NVL nodes. The CPU is different than the others as it is mainly a GPU node, and the CPU is there for mere prep work, if you need to do compute, we have compute only for that or for preparing data. This box is running RHEL.
HPE DL380a Gen12 with Nvidia RTX Pro R6000s
This is an HPE DL380 Gen 12 with eight Nvidia RTX Pro 6000 video cards, 1.0T of RAM and 192
cores of Intel Xeon 6740E for CPU. It has a small boot drive. This is mainly used for GPU for
users that do not want to use the H200 nodes (above, and slightly below). This is a node
where I work, we have several of these and the H200 (NVL/SXM). This box is running RHEL.
New (2026) plate
Dimlight.org server, plate, was having drive issues, but the mobo was really old also.
This is a "newer" (still very old) motherboard replacement. This is a Gigabyte Mini-ITX
board, with a 4Core / 4Thread CPU and 16GB of ram. It is a nice little reliable board,
not server class, but I have used a lot of them in the past. Much faster than the previous
Xeon based box, which had only 4 cores and the same memory. The drives are much faster
now also. This box is running Debian.
HPE DL380a
This is a HPE DL380a server with four Nvidia H200 cards in it. It also contains 192 cores of Intel(R) Xeon(R) 6740E, which are a bit slower, but were chosen due to the higher number of memory channels. It has 1.0TB of memory and a small local disk. It is running RedHat Enterprise Linux 9.
Dell R740xd
This is a Dell RX740xd with a fair amount of disks connected to it. It has 187GB of memory, and a 48 core Intel(R) Xeon(R) Gold 5220R CPU @ 2.20GHz. We have four of these at work, and they are providing access to the disks (they are NSD servers) in our IBM GPFS setup (which is now called IBM Storage Scale for some reason or another). It is running RedHat Enterprise Linux 9.
Supermicro X11dpi Server
This is another custom built server I did at work, I wanted to get the AMD like the previous SuperMicro, but the professor cheaped out and purchased slower used Xeon Gold 6122s so he could have 80 cpus. It has 1TB of memory, and some local spinning disk in addition to the NVMe drives. I do like supermicro, the BIOS/UEFI is super simple and the boards are stable. It was put into a deskside LianLi Evo case which was very nice to work on. Full disclosure, I totally hate Ubuntu, but that was a requirement. I much prefer the Supermicro HI2SSL-I server down below, as it uses the AMD EPYC CPU.
Dell R660 Server
This is a small 2U server with 128 core Intel(R) Xeon(R) Gold 6430 CPU, 1TB of memory, an NVMe drive as the root/boot drive and a small RAID6 array for a data drive which is hanging off of a PERC controller. These "new" Dell servers take so damn long to post. Sometimes I think I could speed build a server from parts before this box can post. I have no love for the Intel CPU, and it is running RHEL, so it has that going against it, but I have to use it.
Gigabyte B550 Ultra Durable AC
This is one of my main computers now. It is running Gentoo Linux. I think I have pared it down to like two main rigs now, and this is one of them. As I noted below, I hate the BIOS, but I like the mobo. A few special notes about this mobo:
- I do not normally use windows, but I have a win disk for those emergencies instead of a VM. This mobo will not install Win, and you can not make a driver disk, so you need to install Win on another computer first. No, I mean it. The driver installs on the current PC, it does not extract the driver. This is a known bug to the community, but apparently not to GB or AMD. Nice.
- The first PCIe slot closest to the CPU is not in the "normal" position, it is one down. This causes me issues in my present case, as my long ass GPU will not fit. UGH. I had to drop down to an older GPU. Who at Gigabyte tought it was a good idea to drop the first PCIe slot? I did not catch that in the picture.
Other than those items, it is an OK board. You may note that I put some old stuff in there for fun, like my 10GB PCIe card, or my zip drive (I also have a SCSI Tape but it was off when I pulled the dmesg). This is my all around jam anything in it PC, so it can backup/get at all of my old media.
SuperMicro H12SSL-I
This is a workstation I made for GPUs at work. A SuperMicro H12SSL-I motherboard with AMD EPYC 7282 16-Core Processor, 256GB of RAM and an Nvidia 4090 (two when the other one arrives). In a nice Lian Li 011 Evo Dynamic case.
Gigabyte Aorus Elite i5
This is a computer at work, it was used to house a GPU, and then rebuilt and another GPU installed. I actually like Gigabyte motherboards, on average, but after you use a super fast/simple BIOS like the Supermicro below, and then you move to one of these "menu for the sake of menu" systems like the Gigabyte, you want to mame the person who coded it. I can config an out of the box supermicro in like 30 seconds. The Aorus, geez, what function key do I need to press to even get into advanced mode so I can see things? Oh, the mouse, you want me to use the mouse, a lot. Good thing ADA doesn't seeming apply to BIOS manufacturers, or there would be lawsuits.
Supermicro X11DPi-N workstation, custom built by me
This is a Supermicro X11DPI-N motherboard with two Xeon SP processors (40 cores / 40 threads), and two Nvidia RTX 3090 GPUs. The setup is in a Lian Li EVO case, and it is pretty nice. The setup uses a 1600W Thermaltake PS, nvme drive and some small memory footprint. It is pretty fast, I wish SuperMicro would make the bios booting a little faster, it takes too long to do a mobo check on this system. Also, the number of PCIe slots assigned to each CPU is strange. CPU0, which you have to install FIRST gets only one x16 slot and one x4 slot, while CPU1, which can only be installed when CPU0 is present, gets THREE x16 slots. WTF!?!
Dell R7525 server
This server has 256 AMD Epyc cores, 1TB of ram and some small disk. I am using it as a compute node in an openstack infrastructure. Kind of amaszing in a way, I used to be in charge of a "supercomputer" that had 180 cores and a few TB of ram. The supercomputer cost a million dollars, took up six racks and needed thousands of dollars a month in A/C and water cooling.. This Dell box was under $25,000 and consumes two rack units of space and no additional cooling requirements were needed in my small data center...
Dell Precision T7600
This is a Dell Precision T7600 workstation. What makes this noteworthy is that it contains 256GB of RAM and two 6core/12thread Xeon cpus. While that might not be overly impressive, the build of this box is pretty nice. It has drive sleds, nice fan arrangements and built in power for two GPUs. It has one 2080 in it now. Not bad for a desktop machine.
Dell Precision 3420
This is my latest machine at my latest job. I hate Dell, but this box with an upgraded SSD is not a bad linux performer. It has Mint, and I also run Gentoo on it. core i7 with 16Gb of ram (or 42X faster than anything at my house, ugh).
Intel S5000VSA server
AKA the latest dimlight.org. How many times can I say "the latest/newest/most recent dimlight.org" in a webpage? A LOT. This replaces the old SuperMicro below. SAS is better than SATA. I don't notice a huge speed increase, it was had for the SAS/SATA backplane. Note, this is running the Xen kernel, debian distribution.
SuperMicro X7SBE board
This is the second to last incarnation of dimlight.org. The 1U server was replaceed with the Supermicro X7SB4. Purchased this old server board so I could keep the old RAID card which is PCI-X-133. A stable little board with a Xeon, pretty cheap to pick up used and plenty powerful for this.
Intel DZ68DB
Another Intel. I am missing something with Intels naming convention of mobos. DZ, DH, DG, so what? Someone forgot to give me the mobo naming manual... This is a desktop mobo (ATX) that we are using for another server. Its OK... I still feel that these mobos leave a lot of speed to be desired. This place buys them as they think they are better off purchasing Intel mobos to go with Intel CPUs. My experience shows otherwise, oh well. Eight core (Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-2600 CPU @ 3.40GHz), 16GB ram, two 3.0TB drives in a hw raid. You would think it would be REALLY fast... I have seen much faster.
Intel DH67CF
This is my machine at work. A MiniITX board stuffed into a really small desktop case. It is OK for a miniitx, the video wa a PITA to get working nicely with X comapred to say Nvidia or ATI. It works... I still sense that even with the cores and the ram it is slower than a full sized mobo. The "server" board that we have that has the same ram, drives (speed and cache not size) and CPU certainly bests it. This little box has an eight core Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-2600S CPU @ 2.80GHz, eight gigs of ram and two 1.0TB seagate enterprise drives. Again, you would think it would be great (in 2012), but I sense the old Dell XPS with Xeons I had previously was faster with Gentoo.
Intel DG45ID
This is a Intel DG45ID system used for a local PBX. Nothing special. Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Quad CPU Q9650 @ 3.00GHz, 4.0Gigs of ram, two 160Gig SSDs in a hardware raid with a 3ware controller. Boots faster than spinning disk... but not super quick running Centos 6.2.
Sun (SunOracle?) X4150
This is a little one U from Sun. It's an ok machine. The iLOM is fairly nice,
but I think the rest of the industry has caught up. At one time the iLOM on
this thing was really nice.
Backblaze server
You can read about the backblaze server here. We
built two of them where I used to work. For the price, the storage is really
cheap, but we made our own custom PS instead of paying a ton of cash as we
were only getting two of them.
SGI Prism machine
This is an SGI Prism machine we had at work. We actually had three of them.
They were decomissioned, but I grabbed this dmesg before we turned them off
and dismantled them.
SGI Altix with 160 cpus
This is an SGI altix machine with 4.1TB of main memory and 160 CPUs running
Suse linux. It is ok. Really more of a pain than anything else.
Dell R200
This is a dell R200 machine. The smallest hunk of crap they make.
Nothing special here. Running gentoo.
Dell XPS machine
Dell XPS machine, running Gentoo.
HP XW4400 workstation
HP XW4400 workstation. This is the cad type workstation from HP. Not too
shabby really... The build quality is nice and it is a slim tower machine.
I usually bad mouth HP since they got out of test equipment, but this
unit is not too bad. I suppose if you gave it to me I would not throw it.
Dell 2970 server
Dell 2970 server. Two quad core AMD's. I like the cpu, but the machine...
total crap. Bought nine of them full of disks. Not two months into it we
have had issues with four of them. Stay away from Dell...far, far away.
Latest dimlight.org machine
This is the latest dimlight.org machine. It, like the machine below, is
a MiniITX system running a Via C3 cpu. This machine is a little slower
Than the one below. It is still pretty fast running gentoo, and I am
doing a lot on it.
MiniITX Via board
This is one of my one rack unit boxes... it is a little MiniITX box with a
Via Esther CPU at 1.5Ghz. The whole setup was like $400, and for a one rack
unit system that is pretty good, IMHO. It works great under linux.
Gigabyte GA965P-DS3
This is my new machine, a Gigabyte GA965P-DS3 with a Core 2 Duo at 2.4Ghz.
2GB of ram, a 250Gb sata drive, nvidia video.
It was a real pain to get gentoo on it, as no boot disc except knoppix would
boot on this motherboard (it would whack the cdrom drive dev input)...
I got the onboard eth controller going, but this is also my gateway so it
also has a 3com boomerang in it.
It is fast however :)
Tomcat K8E w/AMD Athlon64
A Tomcat board with two satas in IDE raid, 1 gig of ram, nothing else special,
just a small web/email server machine. Damn fast compiling the kernel. Damn
fast writing to/fro the drive... 10krpm drives.
Opteron 240, TurboLinux 9 for AMD64
ASUS SK8N with an AMD opteron 240, 1GB memory. Running TurboLinux
for AMD64. Nice distro, running KDE as the default.
Opteron 240, Gentoo AMD64
ASUS SK8N with an AMD opteron 240, 1GB memory. Running Gentoo
beta for AMD64 (LiveCD version). Rather spunky machine, Gentoo
seems to be the real performer on this machine (as of 12/21/2003).
Need to grab the real 2.6.0 kernel and check it.
(Update 02/02/2004, got 2.6.0 on it, great performance. Oh, and X
works now, and KDE.
Opteron 240, Suse 9.0 AMD64
This is an ASUS SK8N with an AMD opteron 240. Has 1GB memory,
crappy nic, and is running Suse 9.0 for AMD 64 (not the retail
version, the ftp, so it is "missing some things" according to
Suse, but fully functional as far as I could see. Spunky machine.
Opteron 240, RedHat Taroon
This is an ASUS SK8N with an AMD opteron 240. This is a test
of redhat Taroon (which is the beta AMD opteron distribution)
Works, ok, but IDE breaks often and it has slow drive access.
Tri-M MZ104
This is a Tri-M industries model MZ104 PC/104 embedded system.
I won this a while back and started really playing with it as of
late. See some specs here.
I will try to get a bigger diskonchip for it and make it a
wearable computer.
G4
This is a G4 running yellow dog linux.
Friend of mine sent in this one, so I did not see
the machine :(.
Compaq Deskpro
This is a compaq deskpro workstation... pretty stock
but some ram was added to it. It is being used as the
network monitoring station where I work. Its just barely
ok. I do not love the compaq machines.
Compaq DL320
This is a compaq DL320 server running RedHat linux.
Totally stock compaq DL320. Its a mail server.
AMD AthlonXP/ABIT
This is the current dimlight server. AMD XP CPU on an ABIT mobo.
I have leaned towards the ABIT boards lately for the good results
I have had with them in the last few years (with AMD cpus). Nice
little board (not the RAID one), runns spiffy. The old IDE drive
really sucks, but I do not have a replacement for it.
Another Sun Ultra 1
This was my last Sun Ultra 1.
I offed it and now only have the 20 and U2. It is a enterprise model,
and does not have the UPA slot, it has a TGX frame buffer. Spunky
running linux, I have a SCSI diff card in it and I also have a RSM
3000 tray for it that I can put scsi (SCA) drives in...now if someone
would just give me some SCA drives to put in it I could check it out.
PIII 933
This is a machine that a friend of mine is installing linux on to
check out using it as a ipmasq machine. PIII 933 machine. I will
ask for the mobo type and put that up...
An old IBM machine
This is an old IBM 6587. It is an P166 with
98 megs of ram. Two drives, cdrom, built in video (crappy, shares
memory), but built like a tank. Same chassis as a RS6000 43P.
I decided to move onto RedHat 7.1 and this was my test bed. Not too bad.
My only Sun box now...
This is a Sun Ultra2 (I still have this one)...
This machine is a really nice linux performer. Unlike the "other" scsi
controllers, this one is fast under linux. I think the drivers for the
adaptec and mylex (buslogic) controllers under linux are just plain slow
for some reason (my experience). Anyhows, 300mhz, 256mb ram, Creator3D
This is the enterprise version so I put the creator in it myself.
Nice machine, really spunky running linux.
My "new" plate
This was my "plate" machine. (I name them after vacuum tube parts)...
This was circa 1998. It was acting as my firewall/webcache/etc,
An old Tekram MB with an AMD K6-200 on it.

Da root
If I recall, this is the root machine at Seans work place. Note the
dual CPUness of da machine. Note that the kernel output looks almost
exactly like that for the Visualize (Doh! both dual CPU machines).
Interesting note #2 is that this machine outputs its OEM ID, a Dell
Poweredge. How quaint.
Seans _OLD_ pager machine
This was the old pager machine for Sean. I think I remember this machine,
actually. 486/DX I think. It ran the sendpage service for him (us?).
Interesting to note the BIOS query of ram and how some things have been
moved around since the 2.0.30 kernel. Look at the cache on that hard disk!
Woohoo! Still beats a 5.25" FH 20MB 3700rpm scsi drive...
AMD K6-2/500 (a.k.a. vacuum2.dimlight.org)
This was my main machine for a while...a long while...
This is a Asus P5A MB with a number nine 331 video card,
Buslogic scsi controller. 390 megs o' ram.
Sun Ultra5/400
I did my entire thesis on this machine. Loads linux faster
than any other machine I have or have had. 400Mhz UltraSparcIIi,
128megs of ram, scsi, crappy video. I think the 2meg cache on
the CPU is what makes it spiffy...
SparcStation 2
This is a Sun sparc station 2. 64megs of ram, it has a PowerUp 80Mhz
cpu in it. Floppy, 1.0gig drive, two nics (although not shown here,
hmmm). Kinda slow, but indestructable. (really, drop it off a cliff
and it may stilll work).
SparcStation 10
This is a Sun sparc station 10. 32megs, 50Mhz, two nics, floppy.
Not a _really_ bad machine, if it had a faster cpu(s) and more ram.
One day I shall upgrade it. This box is a _little_ faster than the
sparc 2, even though the cpu is slower.
HP Visualize-X
Got this machine for some work I did...An HP Visualize X-class server.
It is a Dual PIII with 512 Megs of ram, SCSI U-160,
two 10K rpm SCSI drives, DVD, and a strange HP FX
vid card. Can't seem to get the vid working even
with the HP drivers.... hmph.

AMD K6 333Mhz. Asus TX-97LE board, Number9 I128-2e vid card,
Cheap SB-sound card, CD is scsi, external. 3-Com 509-B.

Dual P-166 on a Tyan 1563D board. Number9 Vision 331 vid card,

AMD K6 200Mhz, GCT-8ITB board (don't ask), Number9 I128-2e vid card,

AMD K6-2 333Mhz. P5BV3+ board. Trident 9880 AGP vid card,
SCSI was replaced with BusLogic, will post new dmesg when
new vid card falls from sky into machine. SCSI-UW drive, IDE
CD, 3-Com 509-B.
dimlight.org
This was the old dimlight.org server. It is not anymore.
electron.dimlight.org
This is Sparcstation4 with 64 megs of ram, a 4.5 Gig 10K rpm drive,
and a 110Mhz cpu. Standard Sparcstation, no sound.
Fermi
This was my machine at work a long time ago. It is a gateway
GP6-233 with 64megs-o-ram. Not too bad with icewm, but helixgnome
gives it a very hard time. No sound.
If anyone would like to have a dmesg up, just drop me
some mail, the dmesg output, and a little info about the
machine (cpu, board, vid card, type of ram)
